What makes a resume ATS-friendly?
Most companies now route applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a human ever opens them. These systems parse your resume into structured fields — name, contact details, employer, dates, skills — so a recruiter can search and filter candidates. A resume built for humans first and ATS parsing second often loses information in that process: text inside a table or header, a photo, decorative icons next to your email, or a multi-column layout can all scramble the reading order or drop content entirely.
All three templates in this builder use a single-column layout, standard section headings, real selectable text, and no tables, photos, or icons for essential contact information — so the same structure that looks clean on screen also parses cleanly through an ATS.
How the ATS score works
The score runs roughly 18 rule-based checks against your resume content as you type: whether your name, email, and phone number are present, whether your summary, experience, education, and skills sections have content, whether experience entries have dates, whether bullet points open with a strong action verb, whether at least some bullets include a measurable result, and a few checks for resume length, overused generic phrases, and repeated words.
Each check that needs attention explains the issue, names the affected section, and links straight to that part of the editor so you can fix it without hunting for it. The final score is a weighted combination of those checks, labeled Needs Work, Fair, Good, or Strong.
This score is a guidance tool, not a guarantee — it can't simulate every applicant tracking system, and a high score doesn't promise an interview.
Matching your resume to a job description
Paste a job description into the job match panel and the tool compares its most frequent, meaningful terms against your resume — filtering out common stop words and normalizing capitalization and basic word variations along the way. You'll see an overall match percentage, which keywords already appear in your resume, which are missing, and a suggested section to add each missing keyword to.
Treat missing keywords as a checklist of things to consider, not a mandate — only add a keyword if it truthfully reflects your experience. Keyword stuffing can help you slip past a parser while reading poorly to the actual human who reviews your application next.
Three templates, one set of resume data
Classic ATS uses conservative typography and a traditional layout suited to corporate, finance, and administrative roles. Modern ATS adds clean typography and a subtle accent color for general professional and management roles. Developer ATS gives skills, projects, and technical experience stronger placement near the top, suited to software engineers, designers, and other technical roles.
Every template reads the same underlying resume data, so switching between them never loses information — only the layout, typography, and accent color change. You can also adjust font, font size, section spacing, page margin, line height, and accent color within safe ranges that keep the layout ATS-readable.
PDF export, done properly
The Download PDF button uses your browser's native print-to-PDF flow against the exact resume markup you see on screen, so the result contains real, selectable, searchable text — never a screenshot or rasterized image — with page breaks that respect section and bullet boundaries where possible.
